What matters to your wellbeing?

That’s the question that postdoctoral fellow Nicole D’souza asks students attending her lecture on social prescribing and mental health. The answers she hears are things like spending time with friends, family, going for a run or listening to music.

“Surprisingly, no one says things that you would find in a doctor’s office,” says D’souza, a CIHR Health Systems Impact Fellow at DLSPH.

D’souza’s question highlights the activities and connections that make a big difference for our health – aspects that our current health systems can overlook. Social prescribing aims to better incorporate these non-clinical aspects of wellbeing into healthcare. Experts say this model could be game changing for students, particularly during the winter months.

Why doctor-recommended art classes, fishing trips and walks in the park could be key to improving our health

In the spring of 2024, my then-nine-year-old daughter, Orla, had emergency neurosurgery in Toronto—twice—for a sudden brain infection. She received months of world-class hospital care that included teams of neurosurgery and infectious-disease specialists, round-the-clock observation and nursing, high-tech MRIs and custom prosthetics, and we never received a bill. That’s what Canadian health care is known for.

But just as important was the social care that helped Orla regain her love of life after losing—and then working to regain—control over the left side of her body. She got access to therapeutic clowns, an accessible garden, therapy dogs, music, playtime with friends and an in-hospital school. Some of her inpatient friends even received help with essentials like food, housing, counselling and family income. In their hospital rooms, each child had a whiteboard where they and their families wrote and drew under the prompt, “What matters to me?” This helped them turn the page from “What’s the matter with me?”—the question that dominated their acute care. Almost invariably, family, friends and fun topped the lists, laying the groundwork for the rehabilitation team to deliver personalized, holistic care. For Orla, the team helped her set—and meet—goals that were beyond our wildest dreams when she was at her sickest; participate in a “MasterChef” food fundraiser with other patients; play ball hockey with Toronto’s pro women’s hockey team, the Sceptres; and take a family visit to the Haliburton wolf sanctuary. I’ve been a health science and policy researcher for two decades, but it was Orla’s experience that showed me the importance of integrating social care into our health outcomes.

A Social Prescription for Care: New Pan-Canadian Social Prescribing Initiative Aims to Improve the Well-being of Caregivers Across the Country

The Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing is thrilled to announce that we are embarking on an exciting caregiver-focused collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence (CCCE) to continue supporting the evolving landscape of social prescribing in Canada. Through a $1.8 million investment over two years, CISP will be working closely with Caregivers Alberta , Caregivers Nova Scotia , Family Caregivers of British Columbia , and the Ontario Caregiver Organization on demonstrative initiatives to enhance health and wellbeing opportunities for caregivers in each province. Research in Focus

We recently hosted a dynamic webinar series "Research in Focus" aimed at advancing knowledge mobilization and engaging researchers and social prescribing enthusiasts in compelling conversations that will help shape the future direction of social prescribing.

Each session delved into critical topics, fostering insightful discussions and learnings. We explored the mapping of current evidence on social prescribing in Canada, conducted a comprehensive Pan-Canadian Policy Scan, delved into the social prescribing needs of seniors, and finally, uncovered the keys to successful codesign processes. While the series has concluded, fret not, as we'll soon be sharing recordings for those eager to catch up on these enriching discussions. Stay tuned for more updates!

Social Prescribing for Children & Youth at the Vanier Social Pediatric Hub

The Vanier Social Pediatric Hub 's social prescribing team has been busy implementing a social prescribing program for children and youth. In this program, participants collaborate with their connector, typically a social worker, to discuss their individual priorities and needs.

Together, they craft a personalized "social prescription" recommending non-medical community activities such as soccer classes, arts and crafts programs, or music lessons. The connector plays a vital role in supporting participants to fulfill their social prescription by identifying and overcoming any obstacles they may encounter. The newly released video linked below, offers a glimpse of Canada's first social prescribing pilot for children and youth at the Vanier Community Services Centre between 2023 to 2024.

Webinar à venir: Modélisation des résultats de la prescription sociale au Canada

À l’automne 2023, l’ICPS a fait appel à KPMG pour rédiger un rapport examinant les impacts sociaux et économiques de la prescription sociale au Canada. C’est avec plaisir que nous vous annonçons que la publication de ce rapport sans précédent est prévue pour mars.

Son objectif principal est de modéliser deux parcours, l’un pour les personnes âgées et l’autre pour les jeunes sélectionnés, en décrivant les résultats réalisables grâce à la prescription sociale dans ces contextes. KPMG a utilisé les données existantes pour construire un modèle adapté au contexte canadien, et nous vous invitons à en apprendre davantage sur la démarche et les découvertes.

Nous organiserons donc un court webinaire avec KPMG le 6 mars à 13 h (HNE) pour présenter les résultats et les conclusions. Cette séance présentera la méthodologie, les données et les résultats. Nous espérons que vous pourrez vous joindre à nous pour en apprendre davantage sur ce travail passionnant qui favorisera l’adoption répandue de la prescription sociale au Canada.

Upcoming Webinar: Social & Economic Impact of Social Prescribing

In the fall of 2023, CISP enlisted KPMG to develop a report examining the social and economic impacts of social prescribing in Canada. We are excited to announce that this groundbreaking report is scheduled for release in March.

The primary focus of the report is to model two illustrative pathways – one for older adults and another for selected youth showcasing the outcomes achievable through social prescribing in these scenarios. KPMG meticulously utilized existing data to construct a model tailored to the Canadian context, and we invite you to gain insights into their process and discoveries.

To facilitate this, we will host a short webinar with KPMG on March 6 at 1PM EST to present the results and outcomes. This session will prvide a factual presentation of the methodology, data and findings. We hope you can join us to learn about this exciting work that will contribute to making a compelling case for the widespread adoption of Social Prescribing throughout Canada.

Établir le mouvement étudiant

Le Collectif étudiant canadien de prescription sociale a pour mission d’établir le mouvement étudiant de promotion de la prescription sociale au Canada! Le collectif, dont c’est le premier anniversaire, a publié son rapport stratégique initial intitulé « Building the Student Movement » à l’automne. Le rapport met en évidence les efforts impressionnants des étudiants pour faire avancer le mouvement de la prescription sociale, notamment en organisant une conférence et plusieurs webinaires, et en établissant diverses sections étudiantes et des groupes de travail sur les campus au pays.

L’ICPS dans la communauté!

Vers l’excellence : examen des pratiques de prescription sociale dans l’ouest du Canada

Une équipe de recherche dirigée par la Dre Kate Mulligan, directrice principale de l’ICPS, s’est lancée dans un voyage à travers le Canada pour explorer des pratiques exemplaires de prescription sociale. En Alberta, l’équipe a participé au sommet Healthy Aging Alberta , une réunion de chercheurs et de praticiens éminents qui ont discuté de l’avenir du vieillissement dans la province.L’un des moments forts de cette visite a été un arrêt à Carya Calgary , un espace enchanteur accueillant divers programmes, dont la prescription sociale. Pendant la semaine, l’équipe a rencontré des experts des Services de santé de l’Alberta , s’est aventurée dans la collectivité rurale de Vulcan, en Alberta, et a pu constater de première main comment le pouvoir de la communauté propulse la mise en œuvre d’initiatives de prescription sociale.

En Colombie-Britannique, l’équipe a rencontré des leaders du domaine, dont des experts de la Nanaimo Division of Family Practice et de Centraide Lower Mainland . La visite à S.U.C.C.E.S.S à Vancouver a mis en valeur la prescription sociale à l’œuvre, avec une performance d’un groupe cantonais local d’opéra. L’équipe a été ravie de rencontrer des leaders étudiants lors de l’événement inaugural en présentiel du Collectif étudiant canadien de prescription sociale !

Pour conclure, un événement remarquable organisé par Centraide Lower Mainland a réuni des agents de liaison de toute la province pour discuter du rôle essentiel de la collaboration dans la prescription sociale. Communauté de pratique

La Communauté de pratique canadienne de la prescription sociale (CPCPS) est un collectif collaboratif et interdisciplinaire de personnes qui discutent de la façon d’intégrer ou de mettre en œuvre des mécanismes de prescription sociale au sein des systèmes de santé et des systèmes sociaux. C’est un lieu où des acteurs qui assurent la mise en œuvre de projets de prescription sociale ou revendiquent au nom du mouvement de prescription sociale, peuvent se rassembler, communiquer et apprendre les uns des autres.Composée de membres de divers secteurs, dont les arts, la promotion des soins de santé, et les milieux universitaires, cette communauté de pratique est organisée par l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé, Centraide Colombie- Britannique et l’Association des centres pour aînés de l’Ontario.

Les rencontres trimestrielles ont lieu et sont enregistrées à 9 h 30 HP/12 h 30 HE le deuxième mardi du mois en janvier, avril, juillet et octobre. Un résumé de la rencontre est offert après sa tenue à tous les membres de la communauté de pratique. Building the Student Movement

The Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective (CSPSC) is on a mission to build the social prescribing student movement across Canada! Celebrating their first anniversary this year, CSPSC released their inaugural strategic report, titled ‘ Building the Student Movement ’ in the fall. The report highlights the impressive efforts of students in advancing the social prescribing movement, including hosting a conference, multiple webinars, and the establishment of various student chapters and working groups on campuses nationwide.

CISP in the Community!

Reimagining Aging: Leading the Way for an Integrated Approach

A research team led by CISP Senior Director, Dr. Kate Mulligan, embarked on a journey across Canada to explore exemplary social prescribing practices. In Alberta, they participated in the Healthy Aging Alberta Summit, a gathering of leading scholars and practitioners discussing the future of aging in the province.One highlight during their visit was a stop in Carya Calgary , an enchanting space hosting various programs, including social prescribing. During the week, the team met with experts from Alberta Health Services , ventured to the rural town of Vulcan, Alberta, and witnessed firsthand how the power of community propels the development of social prescribing initiatives.

Transitioning to British Columbia, the team connected with leaders in the field, including experts from Nanaimo Division of Family Practice and United Way Lower Mainland . The team’s visit to S.U.C.C.E.S.S in Vancouver showcased social prescribing in action, complete with a special performance by a local Cantonese Opera group. The team was delighted to meet student leaders at the Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective’s inaugural in-person event, "Meet, Eat & Greet!"

Concluding with a noteworthy event hosted by United Way Lower Mainland, community connectors from across the province gathered to discuss the pivotal role of co-production in social prescribing. We extend our sincere appreciation to the exceptional Canadian partners who graciously shared their outstanding work and experiences with the team!

Community of Practice

The Canadian Social Prescribing Community of Practice is a collaborative, interdisciplinary collective of people in discussion about how to implement and/or embed social prescribing in health and social systems. It's a place where people who implement social prescribing initiatives or advocate for the social prescribing movement, can convene, connect and learn from each other.With cross-sectoral members from the arts, health care promotion, academia, and other sectors, this Community of Practice is co-hosted by the Alliance for Healthier Communities, the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing, United Way British Columbia, and the Older Adult Centres Association of Ontario.

Quarterly meetings are recorded and held at 9:30 a.m. PST/12:30 p.m. EST on the second Tuesday of the month in January, April, July and October. Summary notes are provided after each meeting to all members of the CoP. Please email communications@allianceon.org for more info on how to join.

Cet article fait partie d’une série, comprenant des histoires dont nous ont fait part plusieurs de nos partenaires, dans le cadre d’une campagne de récits sur la prescription sociale pour souligner la Journée internationale des personnes âgées et la Journée nationale des aînés au Canada, le 1 ^er octobre. Cette campagne représente un effort collaboratif entre les premiers adoptants et les leaders de la prescription sociale au Canada visant à mettre en valeur l’importance de cette initiative. Elle vise à exprimer l’impact profond de la prescription sociale sur l’amélioration de la vie des personnes âgées qui font face à la solitude et à l’isolement.

Des appels pour tisser des liens

Le programme d’appels amicaux de la Croix-Rouge canadienne offre une prescription sociale pour soulager la solitude et améliorer le bien-être émotionnel.

Comme de nombreux aînés au Canada, Shelly aurait besoin de plus d’interactions sociales. Bien qu’elle n’ait pas d’enfants, cette résidente de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard âgée de 54 ans s’est souvent occupée des enfants de sa famille et de ses amis tout au long de sa vie, y trouvant une raison d’être et de la joie. Ces dernières années, Shelly s’est retrouvée avec moins de personnes avec qui interagir.

Au fil du temps, son anxiété croissante causée par le fait d’être dans des espaces publics et entourée de grands groupes de personnes l’a isolée encore davantage. « Il m’est très difficile de sortir et de faire des choses à cause de mon anxiété », explique-t-elle. « Vivre seule peut être très solitaire par moments. »

Shelly a contacté différents services communautaires, mais a eu du mal à trouver un soutien continu. Un jour, une organisation locale lui a donné le numéro de téléphone du programme d’appels amicaux de la Croix-Rouge canadienne. Cette initiative renforce les liens sociaux et le bien-être en prenant régulièrement des nouvelles des participants par téléphone, en leur offrant un soutien émotionnel, en favorisant l’adoption de stratégies d’adaptation saines et en leur proposant des ressources communautaires.

Les appels amicaux sont offerts à toute personne de plus de 18 ans au Canada, en portant une attention particulière aux personnes âgées, aux personnes autochtones, aux travailleurs de première ligne, aux parents, aux proches aidants et à toute personne pouvant tirer parti d’un accès accru à des interactions sociales et à du soutien. Le programme vise à atténuer l’impact important de l’isolement social tant sur la santé individuelle que sur le système de soins de santé.

D’octobre 2022 à juin 2023, le personnel du programme a fait 43 617 appels amicaux et 5 867 appels de soutien additionnel au Canada.

Le programme mobilise près de 1 000 bénévoles qui ont fourni plus de 1,2 million de minutes de soutien par appels amicaux pendant cette période. Plus de 80 % des participants déclarent se sentir moins seuls et plus en sécurité grâce au programme.

Après avoir contacté le programme, Shelly a été jumelée à une conseillère du programme et les choses ont commencé à changer. « Shelly luttait contre l’isolement et ses effets néfastes sur sa santé mentale. Grâce aux appels amicaux réguliers, elle a trouvé non seulement du réconfort, mais aussi un sentiment renouvelé de communauté. Ces appels lui ont apporté un soutien indispensable, l’aidant à traverser des moments difficiles avec un esprit plus fort », explique Myriam Chebat, conseillère du programme d’appels amicaux possédant une formation spécialisée pour aider les participants ayant besoin d’un soutien bonifié pour renforcer leurs habiletés d’adaptation.

Le soutien bonifié du programme est offert aux participants ayant des besoins plus complexes; il peut inclure l’établissement d’objectifs visant à accroître les comportements prosociaux, à reconnaître les pensées inutiles et à gérer les émotions. L’approche flexible et dirigée par le participant repose sur l’écoute active, la validation et l’empathie.

Shelly dit qu’elle attend avec impatience son appel hebdomadaire et apprécie le fait de pouvoir compter sur celui-ci. Elle se sent en sécurité en parlant à sa conseillère, apprend à surmonter ses peurs et affirme que le programme l’aide à sortir plus souvent dans sa communauté. Depuis qu’elle a découvert les appels amicaux, Shelly s’est rapprochée de son église locale et pratique des exercices de pleine conscience et de respiration.

Les aînés, en particulier ceux ayant de faibles revenus ou vivant seuls, font partie des groupes les plus isolés dans les collectivités au Canada. Selon l’Institut national du vieillissement du Canada, les personnes âgées font partie des populations les plus vulnérables sur le plan financier, et le nombre d’entre elles vivant dans la pauvreté est en hausse.

Étant donné la croissance prévue de 68 % de la population âgée du Canada au cours des 20 prochaines années, le renforcement des ressources de soutien social et des capacités communautaires ainsi que l’intégration des services de santé et des services sociaux seront des facteurs essentiels pour favoriser un vieillissement en bonne santé.

Les initiatives de prescription sociale permettent aux professionnels de la santé et aux travailleurs des services sociaux de mettre en contact des individus avec des services de soutien pertinents et des ressources communautaires non médicales, comme les appels amicaux, en vue d’améliorer leur état de santé global. Ces initiatives abordent le bien-être social et émotionnel, ainsi que les besoins fondamentaux tels que le revenu, le logement et l’alimentation, une approche holistique visant à favoriser un plus grand sentiment d’appartenance.

« En voyant l’impact profond des appels amicaux sur des participants comme Shelly, je suis inspirée par leur capacité à guérir, à améliorer le moral, et à atténuer les pressions sur les services publics essentiels », affirme Myriam. « Le programme d’appels amicaux ne se contente pas de mettre des individus en contact; il tisse un filet de résilience, rendant nos communautés plus fortes, plus saines et plus solidaires. »

Le programme d’appels amicaux démontre que d’entendre une voix familière, de savoir que quelqu’un écoute et de faire confiance à cette personne pour obtenir de l’aide peut avoir un impact immense sur le bien-être d’un individu. Le sentiment d’appartenance à une communauté améliore le moral des gens et favorise un sentiment de raison d’être. C’est un rappel simple, mais remarquable, du pouvoir des liens sociaux.

International Day of Older Persons Social Prescribing Storytelling

About this Campaign

This article is one in a series, along with stories shared by several of our partners, as part of a special social prescribing storytelling campaign commemorating the International Day of Older Persons and National Seniors Day in Canada, on October 1. It symbolizes a collaborative effort among early adopters and leaders of social prescribing in Canada, aimed at elevating the prominence of the initiative. This campaign seeks to articulate the profound impact of social prescribing in enhancing the lives of older adults contending with feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Calling for Connection

The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program offers a social prescription for alleviating loneliness and improving emotional well-being.

Like countless older adults in Canada, Shelly could benefit from more social interaction. While she has no children of her own, the 54-year-old Prince Edward Island resident often cared for children of family and friends throughout her life, finding purpose and joy in those experiences. In recent years, Shelly has found herself with fewer people to connect with.

Over time, increasing anxiety caused by being in public spaces and around large groups of people has further isolated Shelly. “It is very hard to get out and do things because of my anxiety,” she shares. “Living alone can be very lonely at times.”

Shelly connected with different community services, but had difficulty finding consistent support. One day, a local organization gave her the phone number for the Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program. The initiative strengthens social connectedness and well-being by checking in with participants through regular phone calls and providing emotional support, encouraging healthy coping strategies, and sharing community resources.

Friendly Calls is available to anyone in Canada over the age of 18, with a focus on reaching older adults, Indigenous peoples, frontline workers, parents, caregivers, and anyone who might benefit from increased access to social interaction and support. The program aims to alleviate the significant impact social isolation has on both individual health and the health care system.

From October 2022 to June 2023, program personnel provided 43,617 Friendly Calls and 5,867 enhanced support calls across Canada. The program engages nearly 1,000 volunteers who provided more than 1.2 million minutes of Friendly Calls support during this time. More than 80 per cent of participants say they feel safer and less lonely thanks to the program.

After reaching out to Friendly Calls, Shelly was paired with a program advisor and things began to shift. “Shelly had been grappling with isolation and its detrimental effects on her mental health. Through regular Friendly Calls, she found not only comfort, but a renewed sense of community. These calls provided direly needed support, helping her navigate tough times with a stronger spirit,” says Myriam Chebat, a Friendly Calls Advisor with special training to help participants in need of enhanced support to strengthen their coping skills.

Friendly Calls enhanced support is available for participants with more complex needs and can include setting goals toward increasing pro-social behaviour, helping to recognize unhelpful thoughts, and managing emotions. The flexible and participant-led approach is grounded in active listening, validation, and empathy.

Shelly says she looks forward to her weekly call and appreciates it's something she can rely on. She feels safe speaking to her advisor, is learning how to work through her fears, and says that the program is helping her get out into her community more often. Since discovering Friendly Calls, Shelly has connected with her local church and has been practising mindfulness and breathing exercises.

Older adults, especially those with lower incomes or who live alone, are one of the most isolated groups in communities across Canada.

According to Canada’s National Institute on Aging, older adults are one of the most financially vulnerable populations, and the number of older adults who experience low income is increasing. With Canada’s senior population expected to grow by 68 per cent over the next 20 years, strengthening social supports, building community capacity, and integrating healthcare and social services will be critical factors in encouraging healthy aging.

Social prescribing initiatives allow healthcare providers and social service professionals to connect individuals with meaningful, non-medical supports and community resources, such as Friendly Calls, to improve their overall health. These initiatives address social and emotional well-being, as well as basic needs, such as income, housing, and food—a holistic approach aimed at cultivating a deeper sense of belonging.

“Witnessing the profound impact of Friendly Calls on participants like Shelly, I am inspired by its capacity to heal, uplift, and alleviate pressures on vital public services,” Myriam says. “The Friendly Calls program isn't just connecting individuals, it's weaving a safety net of resilience, making our communities stronger, healthier, and more closely knit.”

The Friendly Calls program demonstrates that hearing a familiar voice, knowing that someone is listening, and trusting that they are there to help, can have an immense impact on an individual’s well-being. A sense of belonging in community lifts people up and helps to foster purpose in their lives. It's a simple, yet remarkable, reminder of the power of social connection.

The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program, funded through the Public Health Agency of Canada, is free and is available nationwide in English and French. Anyone can sign up by calling 1-833-979-9779 toll-free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time on weekdays, or by accessing the sign-up form online. We’ve grown! We’re excited to introduce new members of the team working together and with our partners to advance social prescribing in Canada. Social Prescribing Student Collective:

Meet, Greet, & Eat!

The Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective (CSPSC) is going on tour this fall! Members of the Collective and other students interested in social prescribing are invited to join co-founders, Caitlin Muhl and Le-Tien Bhaskar, for a social dinner and opportunity to chat about all-things SP! CSPSC Meet, Greet & Eat events will take place in Calgary (Oct.11), Vancouver (Oct. 18), and Ottawa (Nov. 8). Visit CSPSC on LinkedIn for more information and registration details!

Social Prescribing in the City

In April 2023, graduate students from across disciplines and professions participated in a week-long intensive course led by CISP Senior Director, Dr. Kate Mulligan. The course, offered in collaboration with the University of Toronto’s School of Cities and Dalla Lana School of Public Health, introduced students to the theory and practice of social prescribing for healthy cities and urban populations.

The in-person course included guest lecturers from across Canada and around the world, along with visits to social prescribing programs at St. Michael’s Hospital, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Evergreen Canada, and Rexdale Community Health Centre,

one of Canada's first adopters of social prescribing. Reflecting on the visit to Rexdale, Kate said “It's clear the students were bowled over by how integrated the program is there and how welcoming the people and space are.”

Social Prescribing in the City will be offered again in spring 2024.

International Conference on Integrated Care 2023

CISP Director, Sonia Hsiung, had the opportunity to share about Canada’s progress toward integrated care through social prescribing in a plenary panel at the 23rd International Conference on Integrated Care (ICIC23), held in Belgium in May 2023. ICIC23 brought together leaders, researchers, clinicians, patients and caregivers who are engaged in integrated health and social care delivery and design.

Reimagining Aging: Leading the Way for an Integrated Approach

On October 10 to 12, Healthy Aging Alberta and the Alberta Association on Gerontology will host the first-ever Healthy Aging Alberta Summit 2023. Reimagining Aging: Leading the Way for an Integrated Approach will be hosted in-person and virtually, with live sessions broadcast in real time. These three days of learning will bring together community organizations and systems partners to co-create a collaborative environment for an integrated approach to healthy aging for older Albertans. Cultivating Connections:

Pathways to Well-being

The Alliance for Healthier Communities Social Prescribing Virtual Conference returns this year on October 19! Dynamic discussions, a celebration of triumphs, and exploration of challenges will shape the day for Cultivating Connections: Pathways to Well-being, including two world-class plenary speakers. Following the conference, on October 20, community organizations are invited to participate in the Social Prescription for Human Connection event. Groups will host their own activities encouraging people to connect, while sharing their collective experiences on social media to amplify the power of social prescribing. Canadian Caregiving Summit 2023

Most Canadians will need care or give care at some point in our lives, yet families are stretched thin, and our elders and people with disabilities are struggling. The Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence (CCCE) is working to transform the experiences of caregivers, care providers and care recipients across the country. CISP Senior Director, Dr. Kate Mulligan, will be participating in a social prescribing panel discussion facilitated by Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective co-founder Caitlin Muhl. Be a part of building a national caregiving strategy at the Canadian Caregiving Summit, a three-day hybrid event in Ottawa, Ontario, from November 6 to 8, 2023.

Collectif étudiant en prescription sociale : rencontre et repas

Le Collectif étudiant en prescription sociale du Canada part en tournée cet automne. Les membres du collectif et d’autres étudiants intéressés par la prescription sociale sont invités à se joindre aux co-fondatrices, Caitlin Muhl et Le-Tien Bhaskar, pour un souper social et une occasion de discuter de tout ce qui concerne la prescription sociale. Les événements de rencontre et repas du collectif auront lieu à Calgary (11 octobre), Vancouver (18 octobre) et Ottawa (8 novembre).

Cours : « Social Prescribing in the City »

En avril 2023, des étudiants aux études supérieures de diverses disciplines et professions ont participé à un cours intensif d’une semaine dirigé par la directrice principale de l’ICPS, Dre Kate Mulligan. Ce cours, offert en collaboration avec la « School of Cities » et la « Dalla Lana School of Public Health » de l’Université de Toronto, a présenté aux étudiants la théorie et la pratique de la prescription sociale pour des villes et des populations urbaines en santé.

Le cours en présentiel comprenait des conférenciers du Canada et d’ailleurs dans le monde et des visites de programmes de prescription sociale à l’Hôpital

St. Michael, au Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario, à Evergreen Canada et au Centre de santé communautaire de Rexdale, l’un des premiers adoptants de la prescription sociale au Canada. En pensant à la visite à Rexdale, Kate a déclaré : « Il est clair que les étudiants ont été impressionnés par l’intégration du programme là-bas et par l’accueil chaleureux des personnes et des lieux. »

Le cours « Social Prescribing in the City » sera à nouveau proposé au printemps 2024.

Conférence internationale sur les soins intégrés 2023

La directrice de l’ICPS, Sonia Hsiung, a eu l’occasion de présenter les progrès du Canada en matière de soins intégrés par la prescription sociale lors d’une plénière dans le cadre de la 23e Conférence internationale sur les soins intégrés (International Conference on Integrated Care—ICIC23), qui s’est tenue en Belgique en mai 2023. La conférence a réuni des leaders, des chercheurs, des cliniciens, des patients et des aidants qui participent à la prestation et à la conception de soins de santé et de services sociaux intégrés.

Sommet Healthy Aging Alberta 2023

Du 10 au 12 octobre, Healthy Aging Alberta et l’Association albertaine de gérontologie tiendront le premier Sommet Healthy Aging Alberta. Son thème « Reimagining Aging: Leading the Way for an Integrated Approach » (Repenser le vieillissement : tracer la voie pour une approche intégrée) se déroulera en présentiel et en virtuel, avec des séances diffusées en direct. Ces trois jours d’apprentissage réuniront des organisations communautaires et des partenaires du système pour la création d’un environnement collaboratif favorisant une approche intégrée pour un vieillissement en santé pour les aînés albertains. Conférence sur la prescription sociale de l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé

La conférence virtuelle sur la prescription sociale de l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé est de retour cette année le 19 octobre! Des discussions dynamiques, une célébration des réussites et l’exploration des difficultés rencontrées, et deux conférenciers de renommée mondiale seront à l’ordre du jour de cette journée qui se déroulera sous le thème « Entretenir des liens : une voie vers le bien-être ». Après la conférence, le 20 octobre, les organisations communautaires sont invitées à participer à l’événement « L’établissement de rapports humains à l’aide de la prescription sociale ». Les groupes organiseront leurs propres activités, ce qui encouragera les gens à se rencontrer, tout en partageant leurs expériences collectives sur les médias sociaux pour amplifier le message concernant le pouvoir de la prescription sociale. Communauté de pratique

Les membres proviennent de divers domaines notamment des arts, de la promotion de la santé et du milieu universitaire. Cette communauté de pratique est coprésentée par l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé, l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale, Centraide Colombie-Britannique et l’Association des centres pour aînés de l’Ontario.

Les réunions trimestrielles enregistrées ont lieu le deuxième mardi des mois de janvier, avril, juillet et octobre, à 9 h 30 (HNP)/12 h 30 (HNE). La Journée internationale de la prescription sociale : le pouvoir transformationnel de la prescription sociale est à l’honneur

La Journée internationale de la prescription sociale s’est déroulée le 9 mars 2023 et a rassemblé les communautés, les professionnels des soins de santé et les particuliers de partout au monde pour célébrer le pouvoir transformationnel de la prescription sociale. Ce projet novateur a mis en vedette l’incidence remarquable de mettre les gens en contact avec les interventions non-médicales pour améliorer la santé et le bien-être.

Tout au long de la journée, divers événements et activités se sont déroulés pour inspirer et habiliter les participants à adopter la prescription sociale en tant qu’approche holistique aux soins de santé. Les ateliers et webinaires, y compris La prescription sociale à l’honneur : une tournée virtuelle d’un bout à l’autre du Canada de l’ICPS, ont souligné les avantages d’intégrer les activités communautaires sociales et culturelles aux plans de traitement des soins de santé pour favoriser une compréhension approfondie du lien entre la connexion sociale et le bien-être global. La prescription sociale à l’honneur : une tournée virtuelle d’un bout à l’autre du Canada

Le 9 mars, les chefs de file de la prescription sociale de partout au Canada se sont rassemblés pour une tournée éclair afin de célébrer l’état actuel de cette pratique et les possibilités émergentes dans diverses régions partout au pays. Ils ont également fait une brève escale internationale pour écouter les chefs de file internationaux réunis à Londres au Royaume-Uni pour marquer cette journée.

Cet évènement était organisé conjointement par l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale , l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé , Centraide – Colombie-Britannique* et le Collectif étudiant canadien de prescription sociale .

Nous sommes en pleine croissance!

Nous sommes heureux de vous présenter Yordanos Woldermariam, nouvelle gestionnaire principale de projet qui mènera la mobilisation des connaissances, l’apprentissage et la formation, et les occasions en matière de politique pour faire progresser la prescription sociale au Canada.

Mme Yordanos est une professionnelle accomplie du domaine de la santé publique et des services sociaux. Ses domaines d’expertise sont la santé communautaire, l’équité en santé, la santé mentale et les maladies chroniques, avec une spécialisation en réflexion conceptuelle et en méthodologies de conception de la recherche.

Elle possède de l’expérience en gestion de projets des systèmes de santé complexes en collaboration avec divers intervenants en vue d’améliorer les résultats de santé de la population. De plus, elle apporte au rôle une douzaine d’années d’expérience de première ligne dans les secteurs de la santé et des services sociaux en Ontario.

M ^me Yordanos a obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences de la santé et études du développement global de l’Université Western et a achevé sa maîtrise en design de la santé à l’Université de l’École d’art et de design de l’Ontario. Elle a hâte d’apporter son mélange unique d’expériences à la Croix-Rouge canadienne et d’appuyer la croissance de l’ICPS. Vous pouvez vous attendre à recevoir de ses nouvelles au cours des prochains mois!

La contribution des bénévoles en prescription sociale au Canada à l’honneur

Le bénévoles en prescription sociale d’un bout à l’autre du Canada accordent leur temps, énergie et compétences à venir en aide aux personnes dans leurs communautés.

Pendant la Semaine nationale de l’action bénévole (du 16 au 22 avril 2023), nous avons célébré le rôle essentiel que jouent les bénévoles dans le succès de la prescription sociale. De la navigation aux appels amicaux, en passant par l’animation de groupes et d’activités communautaires, les bénévoles ont une incidence positive sur la vie de nombreuses personnes au Canada

Over the past year, the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing has been making significant strides in improving the health and well-being of individuals in Canada by sharing, connecting, promoting, and celebrating social prescribing practices in Canada. Our efforts would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers who play a pivotal role in advocating for and championing the profound impact that social prescribing has on our communities.

Appel à contributions : La prescription sociale au Canada

Quoique les pratiques de prescription sociale continuent de prendre de l’ampleur et de se répandre au Canada, relativement peu de littérature a été publiée sur la prescription sociale en contexte canadien ou par des chercheurs, praticiens et participants canadiens.

Promotion de la santé et prévention des maladies chroniques au Canada : Recherche, politiques et pratiques (la revue PSPMC) , revue de la Direction générale de la promotion de la santé et de la prévention des maladies chroniques de l'Agence de la santé publique du Canada, prévoit un numéro spécial sur la prescription sociale avec les rédacteurs invités Sandra Allison, Kiffer Card et Kate Mulligan, directrice principale de l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale.

L’objectif de ce numéro spécial est de caractériser et de partager la recherche et les pratiques en cours sur la prescription sociale, par et pour les résidents du Canada, en particulier ceux qui sont victimes d’iniquités en matière de santé et de ses déterminants sociaux et structurels.

Promotion de la santé et prévention des maladies chroniques au Canada : Recherche, politiques et pratiques sollicite donc des articles de recherche qualitative et quantitative et des commentaires, qui présentent de nouvelles conclusions, font la synthèse de données probantes existantes ou imaginent de nouvelles façons d’aller de l’avant.

Échéance pour les soumissions: le 31 juillet 2023.

Semaine nationale des aînés

Au Canada, la semaine nationale des aînés est un événement annuel qui reconnaît les contributions et réalisations des personnes âgées.

La prescription sociale peut jouer un important rôle de promotion du bien-être, de la participation sociale et de la qualité de vie des aînés.

Du 5 au 9 juin 2023, l’ICPS et d’autres partenaires communautaires se joindront à la Coalition canadienne pour la santé des personnes âgées (CCSMPA), alors que l’organisme met l’accent sur la résilience des aînés canadiens dans le cadre de la Semaine nationale des aînés.

Celebrating the Transformative Power of Social Prescribing

International Social Prescribing Day was held on March 9th, 2023, and brought together communities, healthcare professionals, and individuals from across the world to celebrate the transformative power of social prescribing. This innovative initiative showcased the remarkable impact of connecting people with non-medical interventions for improved health and well-being.

Throughout the day, various events and activities unfolded, inspiring and empowering participants to embrace social prescribing as a holistic approach to healthcare. Workshops and webinars, including CISP's Celebrating Social Prescribing: A Virtual Tour Across Canada, highlighted the benefits of integrating social, cultural, and community-based activities into healthcare treatment plans, fostering a deeper understanding of the profound link between social connection and overall wellness. Celebrating Social Prescribing: A Virtual Tour Across Canada

On March 9th, social prescribing leaders from across Canada came together for a whistle-stop tour across the country to celebrate the current state of social prescribing and emerging opportunities in different regions across Canada. They also made a brief international stop to hear from global leaders gathered in London, UK to mark the day.

This event was jointly hosted by the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing , the Alliance for Healthier Communities , the United Way British Columbia , and the C anadian Social Prescribing Student Collective .

We are Growing!

We are pleased to introduce Yordanos Woldermariam, new Senior Project Manager who will be leading knowledge mobilization, learning and training, and policy opportunities to advance social prescribing in Canada. Yordanos is an accomplished public health and social service professional.

Her expertise are in community health, health equity, mental health and chronic health conditions with a specialization in design thinking and design research methodologies. She has experience managing complex health systems projects and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to improve population health outcomes. She also brings over 12 years of experience working frontline in the health and social service sectors in Ontario.

Yordanos received an Honours Bachelor's degree in Health Science and Global Development Studies at the University of Western Ontario and completed her Master's degree in Design for Health at OCAD University. She is excited to bring her unique blend of experiences to the Canadian Red Cross and supporting the growth of CISP. You can look forward to hearing from her in the coming months!

Celebrating the Contribution of Social Prescribing Volunteers in Canada

Social Prescribing volunteers across Canada devote their time, energy, and skills to help others in their communities.

During National Volunteer Week (April 16-22, 2023), we celebrated the vital role that volunteers play making Social Prescriptions a success. Over the past year, the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing has been making significant strides in improving the health and well-being of individuals in Canada by sharing, connecting, promoting, and celebrating social prescribing practices in Canada. Our efforts would not be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers who play a pivotal role in advocating for and championing the profound impact that social prescribing has on our communities.

We would like to acknowledge the valuable contributions made by the CISP Participant Advisory Council. They have been journeying along with us to enrich our work in social prescribing.

Call for Papers: Social Prescribing in Canada

While Social Prescribing practices continue to scale and spread across Canada, there is relatively little published literature on Social Prescribing in Canadian contexts and by Canadian researchers, practitioners and participants.

The Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention in Canada: Research, Policy and Practice (HPCDP) Journal , a journal of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch, will be featuring a special issue on social prescribing with guest editors, Dr. Sandra Allison, Dr. Kiffer Card and Dr. Kate Mulligan, Senior Director of the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing.

The objective of this special issue is to identify and share the most current research and practice on Social Prescribing by and for residents of Canada, particularly those facing inequities in access to health and its social and structural determinants.

Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention in Canada: Research, Policy and Practice is therefore seeking relevant qualitative and quantitative research articles, as well as commentaries, that present new findings, synthesize existing evidence or imagine new ways forward.

Submission deadline: July 31, 2023.

National Seniors' Week

National Seniors' Week is an annual event in Canada that celebrates and recognizes the contributions and achievements of older adults.

Social prescribing can play a significant role in promoting the well-being, social engagement and quality of life of seniors.

From June 5-9, 2023, CISP and other community partners will be joining the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (CCSMH), as they highlight the resilience of Canadian Seniors during National Seniors’ Week.

"Studies into the impacts of social prescribing from the U.K. show fewer visits to emergency and fewer visits to doctors, and Mulligan says U.S. research shows a reduction in burnout when providers socially prescribe.

Research has also shown that people around the world regularly consult doctors for problems that are primarily non-medical. Canada is no exception.

"You have, at the primary care level, patients coming in with issues which really aren't appropriately treated medically … where a non-medical prescription would be better," said Alayne Adams, an associate professor in the department of family medicine at McGill University."

"What if, before you were released from the hospital, on top of medical advice, someone instructed you to sign up for, say, a Spanish class as part of your recovery plan?

Or, instead, to spend a few hours a week volunteering at the local dog rescue?

Thanks to “social prescribing” programs, which are drawing attention to the importance of social connection in the healing process and better health outcomes in general, this kind of advice is becoming more common. The growing movement is one that’s supported by recent research from the University of Toronto showing that, across a range of illnesses, people who were “thriving” in recovery all had one thing in common — social connection."

Social Prescribing in Canada: A Tool for Integrating Health and Social Care for Underserved Communities

ABSTRACT

Social prescribing is a practical tool for addressing the social determinants of health through supported referrals to community services. This globally spreading intervention aims to meet the needs of underserved populations and to better link health and social care organizations by supporting self-management and connecting participants to non-clinical supports in their communities, such as food and income support, parks and walking groups, arts activities and friendly visiting. This paper describes the current state of social prescribing in Canada, provides an overview of the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing and offers an introduction to processes and resources for initiating social prescribing interventions.

Le 9 mars et tout au long de la semaine, les personnes et organismes à travers le monde entier partageront des ressources et organiseront des événements portant sur la prescription sociale. Soyez des nôtres pendant que nous rehaussons la sensibilisation à l’égard de ce qu’est la prescription sociale et comment elle fonctionne, et que nous mettons en évidence l’effet qu’elle peut avoir sur les personnes et les collectivités au Canada.

Au Canada, la prescription sociale gagne rapidement l’attention des décideurs gouvernementaux, des praticiens de la santé et des fournisseurs de services communautaires.

Lors de la Journée internationale de la prescription sociale (le 9 mars), joignez-vous à des chefs de file de la prescription sociale de partout au Canada pour une tournée éclair afin de célébrer et de trouver l’inspiration dans l’état actuel de cette pratique et les possibilités émergentes dans diverses régions. Nous ferons également une brève escale internationale pour discuter avec des chefs de file réunis à Londres au Royaume-Uni pour marquer cette journée.

Cet évènement est organisé conjointement par l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale , l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé , Centraide – Colombie-Britannique et le Collectif étudiant canadien de prescription sociale .

Élaboration de directives cliniques sur l’isolement social et la solitude : enquête auprès de fournisseurs de soins et de services sociaux

La Coalition canadienne pour la santé mentale des personnes âgées (CCSMPA) recueille de l’information de la part des fournisseurs de soins et de services sociaux partout au Canada, pour les aider à en apprendre plus sur les expériences et points de vue à travailler auprès des personnes âgées aux prises avec l’isolement social et la solitude.

Les résultats de l’enquête aideront à déterminer les directives cliniques pour les fournisseurs de soins et de services sociaux en plus d’élaborer des ressources à l’intention des cliniciens et des personnes âgées et leurs soignants. L’enquête a été validée par le Comité d’éthique de la recherche en sciences de la santé et des hôpitaux d’enseignement affiliés à l’Université Queen’s.

L’enquête prend 10 à 12 minutes à remplir.

Social prescribing is now a global movement. More than 17 countries worldwide are engaged in the practice across sectors that include primary, secondary, rehabilitation, acute care, home care and community services. In Canada, social prescribing is quickly gaining the attention of government decision makers, health practitioners, and community service providers.

On International Social Prescribing Day (March 9th), join social prescribing leaders from across Canada for a whistle-stop tour across the country to celebrate and be inspired by the current state of this work and emerging opportunities in different regions. We will also make a brief international stop to hear from global leaders gathered in London, UK to mark the day.

This event is jointly hosted by the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing , the Alliance for Healthier Communities , the United Way British Columbia , and the Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective .

Developing clinical guidelines for social isolation and loneliness: survey for health and social service providers

The Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health (CCSMH) is gathering information from health and social service providers across Canada, to help them learn more about experiences and insights working with older adults dealing with social isolation and loneliness.

This survey will inform the creation of clinical guidelines for healthcare and social service providers as well as the development of resources for clinicians and older adults and their caregivers. This survey has been approved by the Queen’s University Health Sciences and Affiliated Teaching Hospitals Research Ethics Board (HSREB).

The survey should take 10-12 minutes to complete.

Canada's first graduate course on social prescribing

We're excited to announce the first ever graduate course on Social Prescribing, co-hosted by the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing (CISP), the Dalla Lana School of Public Health , and the University of Toronto School of Cities .

About the course

This one-week, interdisciplinary course on Social Prescribing will be facilitated by Kate Mulligan, Senior Director of CISP. The week will include guest lecturers from across Canada and around the world, along with visits to Social Prescribing programs focused on urban health in the Toronto area.

Message de la responsable de projet

Je profite de cette fin d’année qui arrive à grands pas pour vous exprimer ma reconnaissance, précieux membres de l’Institut canadien de la prescription sociale. Nous vous remercions de votre participation continue. Sachez que c’est grâce à votre enthousiasme et à votre énergie que nous avons déjà fait autant de chemin.

À l’ICPS, cette année a été marquée par les opportunités, la croissance et le perfectionnement. Depuis notre création, notre rayonnement ne cesse de s’accroître ici, au Canada, mais également à l’international. Ensemble, nous contribuons à créer un monde où chaque personne et chaque communauté au Canada vit en santé, dans la résilience et l’épanouissement. Un monde où les gens peuvent prendre en main leur santé ainsi que les facteurs qui l’influencent grâce au soutien d’un réseau concerté réunissant les acteurs communautaires, les soins de santé et les services sociaux.

En cette période de réjouissances et de retrouvailles, l’ICPS désire resserrer les liens qui nous unissent.

À l’aube de cette nouvelle année, je suis certaine que nous verrons se poursuivre l’essor de la prescription sociale, qui favorise la santé, le bien-être et d’autres dimensions importantes, en s'appuyant sur les forces et les capacités des personnes et des communautés. Restez à l’affût des prochains numéros pour être au courant des nouvelles ressources, des webinaires et des événements à venir.

Communauté de pratique

La Communauté de pratique canadienne de la prescription sociale (CPCPS) est un collectif collaboratif et interdisciplinaire de personnes qui se consacrent à intégrer des mécanismes de prescription sociale au sein des systèmes de santé et des systèmes sociaux. Cette communauté de pratique réunissant des acteurs de divers domaines, notamment des arts, de la santé et du milieu universitaire, est le fruit d’une collaboration entre l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé, l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale, Centraide Colombie-Britannique et l’Association des centres pour aînés de l’Ontario.Les réunions trimestrielles ont lieu le deuxième mardi des mois de janvier, avril, juillet et octobre, à 9 h 30 (HNP)/12 h 30 (HNE). Ces rencontres sont enregistrées. Le résumé de chaque réunion est envoyé à tous les membres de la communauté de pratique. Au cours de l’été dernier, Bridgeable a publié un rapport sur l’état actuel de la prescription sociale au Canada ainsi qu’ une carte illustrant le parcours utilisé dans le cadre d’un vaste éventail d’initiatives de prescription sociale au Canada.

Le cabinet d’experts-conseils a récemment présenté son travail et publié l'intégralité de ses conclusions et recommandations sur un microsite interactif , où vous pouvez découvrir la méthodologie du projet et les résultats des recherches, en plus de visionner des témoignages de personnes pratiquant la prescription sociale. On y trouve également de l’information sur les cinq piliers de la prescription sociale mis de l’avant par Bridgeable et des pistes de solution pour leur mise en œuvre.

Un outil axé sur la prescription sociale et destiné aux professionnelles et professionnels de la santé a récemment été créé par le Centre for Effective Practice (CEP), en collaboration avec l’Alliance pour des communautés en santé et l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale (ICPS), sous la direction du D ^r Dominik Nowak.

Cet outil propose des conseils pratiques, des messages et des mesures concrètes que les professionnels peuvent adopter pour une meilleure intégration de la prescription sociale à leur pratique, peu importe le modèle actuel. Fondé sur les meilleures données probantes et recommandations disponibles en matière de prescription sociale, cet outil sera continuellement étoffé et affiné grâce aux commentaires de spécialistes. Si vous désirez contribuer à ce projet, nous vous invitons à rejoindre notre communauté d'intérêts sur les soins cliniques.

Travaux de recherche

La prépublication de l’article Establishing Internationally Accepted Conceptual and Operational Definitions of Social Prescribing Through Expert Consensus: A Delphi Study (en anglais seulement) est parue sur le site de medRxiv. Caitlin Muhl, coprésidente du collectif étudiant canadien de promotion de la prescription sociale, ainsi que la D ^re Kate Mulligan, directrice principale et conseillère stratégique à l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale font partie des auteurs de cet article. L’équipe de recherche a réuni 48 spécialistes en prescription sociale provenant de 26 pays différents, dont le Canada, pour parvenir à un consensus sur la définition de la prescription sociale. Les résultats de ce travail ont également permis la création du cadre conceptuel d'une vision commune de la prescription sociale.

Message From the Project Lead

As we approach the end of the year, I want to extend deep gratitude to all of you for being a part of the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing. Thank you for connecting with us in 2022. Without your enthusiasm and energy, we wouldn’t be where we are now.

This year has been one of growth, development, and opportunities for CISP. Since our launch, our partnership has been constantly growing across Canada and internationally. Together, we are working toward a world where people and communities across Canada are healthy, resilient, and flourishing – leading on their own health and determinants of health with the support of well-connected community, social, and health sectors.

This is a season of joy and rekindling connections, and CISP is focused on strengthening this connection with everyone from coast-to-coast.

And as we step into the new year, I am wishful that we can continue to grow and enhance social prescribing to drive positive impacts on health, wellbeing, and wider outcomes by building on strengths and gifts of individuals and communities. Stay tuned for new resources, webinars, and knowledge sharing events to come.

Community of Practice

The Canadian Social Prescribing Community of Practice is a collaborative, interdisciplinary collective of people in discussion about how to implement and/or embed social prescribing in health and social systems. With cross-sectoral members from the arts, health care promotion, academia, and other sectors, this Community of Practice is co-hosted by the Alliance for Healthier Communities, the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing, United Way British Columbia, and the Older Adult Centres Association of Ontario.Quarterly meetings are recorded and held at 9:30 a.m. PST/12:30 p.m. EST on the second Tuesday of the month in January, April, July and October. Summary notes are provided after each meeting to all members of the CoP. Please email communications@allianceon.org for more info on how to join.

Over the summer, Bridgeable released a report on the current state of social prescribing in Canada and a map that illustrates a high-level view of the current social prescribing pathway across a wide range of social prescribing initiatives in Canada.

Recently, they presented their work and shared their full findings and recommendations through an interactive microsite . There you can explore their process, view their research, watch video reflections from social prescribing practitioners, and see their ideas for how their five building blocks for social prescribing could be implemented.

Social Prescribing: A Resource for Health Professionals was recently developed by the Centre for Effective Practice (CEP) in collaboration with the Alliance for Healthier Communities and the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing. Clinical leadership of the resource was provided by Dr. Dominik Nowak.

The social prescribing resource equips health professionals with practical tips, talking points, and tangible next steps to support them in integrating social prescribing into their practice, regardless of their practice model. This resource draws from the best-available evidence and guidance on social prescribing, and will continue to be built out and refined with feedback from clinical leaders. If you are interested in contributing to this work, please join our Clinical Community of Interest.

Research

The preprint for Establishing Internationally Accepted Conceptual and Operational Definitions of Social Prescribing Through Expert Consensus: A Delphi Study has been posted to medRxiv. Authors include Caitlin Muhl, Co-Lead of the Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective, and Dr. Kate Mulligan, Senior Director and Strategic Advisor for the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing. The research team brought together 48 social prescribing experts from 26 different countries - including Canada, to reach consensus on the definition of social prescribing. They also transformed the results of this work into the Common Understanding of Social Prescribing (CUSP) conceptual framework.

Créer les conditions propices à la prescription des possibles au Canada...

avec l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale

Véritable pôle national de la connexion, de la collaboration et des partenariats communautaires, l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale (ICPS), qui sert la population d’un bout à l’autre du pays et représente à la fois le système de santé et les milieux universitaires, étudiants, communautaires, gouvernementaux et politiques, a été récemment lancé lors d’un webinaire. Au dire de la directrice de l’ICPS, Sonia Hsiung, le potentiel de la prescription sociale est immense, car elle s’avère en fait une prescription des possibles.

« Ce que la prescription sociale peut offrir, dans des conditions idéales, c’est une collaboration délibérée entre les systèmes de santé et les services sociaux ainsi qu’entre les prestataires et leurs patients et patientes en vue de créer une communauté plus connectée. La prescription sociale vous donne les moyens de déterminer vos propres objectifs et de prendre le contrôle de votre bien-être grâce à une démarche d’accompagnement qui met de l’avant vos besoins et qui permet de créer des solutions par la collaboration. »

Comme des partenariats sont à l’origine de l’ICPS, les mots « création » et « collaboration » sont au cœur de cette initiative. La Croix-Rouge canadienne sert de point d’ancrage à l’ICPS, et selon Tanya Elliott, cheffe, Santé de l’organisation, il s’agit d’une combinaison gagnante.

« La Croix-Rouge canadienne est honorée de servir de point d’ancrage à l’ICPS. La prescription sociale est une pratique qui gagne à être connue, et le travail de l’ICPS est en parfaite adéquation avec la transformation en cours de nos programmes de santé communautaire. »

L’un des participants au webinaire a découvert la prescription sociale dans le cadre du programme Active Aging en Colombie-Britannique, à la recommandation de son prestataire de soins de santé. Il explique : « Les programmes de prescription sociale peuvent éviter que des symptômes ou des petits soucis de santé deviennent de véritables pathologies. Ils proposent des services offerts en dehors du cadre clinique ou médical qui peuvent aider les gens à surmonter ces difficultés. C’est, du moins, ce que la prescription sociale a fait pour moi. »

L’objectif de l’ICPS est de rassembler des groupes de partout au Canada, comme Active Aging, pour que d’autres histoires comme celles d’Allan fassent des petits. Selon la Dre Grace Park, en privilégiant les populations prioritaires et l’équité en santé, la prescription sociale a le potentiel d’alléger le fardeau des prestataires de soins de santé primaires.

« Nous pouvons aider notre entourage sans compter uniquement sur le système de santé, car ce n’est pas là où la vraie santé réside. Le système de santé ne représente qu’un cinquième du portrait global d’une société saine et compatissante. »

L’équipe de l’ICPS a hâte d’inspirer de nouveaux partenariats et de voir des initiatives de prescription sociale porter leurs fruits. Des championnes et champions de la prescription sociale comme le Dr Andrew Boozari sont motivés par la suite des choses.

« Je pense que la raison pour laquelle je nourris tant d’espoir à l’égard de la prescription sociale, c’est qu’elle rime avec un réel engagement collectif à créer quelque chose de mieux et à faire de la place dans le système pour les personnes qui en ont été complètement exclues. »

The Canadian Stage is Set with a Prescription for Possibilities…

Through Social Prescribing and CISP

With an audience from coast-to-coast and representation from the health, academia, student, community, government, and policy making sectors, the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing (CISP) officially made its introduction as Canada’s hub for connection, collaboration, and community partnerships. In the webinar launch, CISP director Sonia Hsiung says there is so much potential for CISP in Canada, as social prescribing is a prescription for possibilities.

“What social prescribing at its fullest can offer, is an intentional collaboration between health and social care systems, practitioners and individuals that create a more connected community. It prioritizes and enables a person’s ability to determine their own goals, take control of their own well-being in a supportive pathway by asking what matters to them, and co-designing those solutions together.” “Co-design”, and “together”, are key words to this initiative, as partnerships play a key role in making CISP happen. The Canadian Red Cross is serving as the anchor for the Institute, and the Red Cross’s chief of health, Tanya Elliott, says it’s a perfect fit.

“The Canadian Red Cross is honored to be serving as the anchor for the CISP. Social prescribing is a practice – and the work of the CISP holds such meaningful alignment to the transformation that is currently underway within our own community health programming at the Red Cross.”

One webinar participant, who was connected to social prescribing by his primary care provider through Active Aging in British Columbia, said, “Programs like social prescribing can both prevent concerns and symptoms from becoming pathologies, and in a non-clinical or non-medical setting can help people win over these challenges. I guess that’s what social prescribing has been doing for me.”

The plan for CISP is to gather the groups across Canada like Active Aging, so that many more stories like his can be told. With a focus on priority populations and health equity as a cornerstone for an effective practice, Dr. Grace Park says social prescribing has a bright future in taking some of the load off the primary healthcare providers.

“We can help our neighbors and we don’t have to turn to the health care sector for everything, because that’s not where health really lies; they only take up 20% of the big picture of a healthy compassionate community.” The team is looking forward to inspiring and creating these partnerships and to watching them thrive and flourish together through CISP. Social prescribing champions like Dr. Andrew Boozari are inspired by what’s ahead.

“I think this is where I draw so much hope in a room like this where there is real collective commitment to seeing something better, and actually bridging a system for people who have been completely shut out.”

Bienvenue à la première édition du bulletin de l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale! Je vous remercie, vous, les champions de la prescription sociale, les premiers adhérents et ceux qui souhaitent en apprendre davantage, de vous joindre à nous dans cette nouvelle aventure.

Administré par la Croix-Rouge canadienne, l’Institut canadien de prescription sociale (ICPS) est un nouveau pôle national qui vise à promouvoir, à présenter et à souligner les initiatives qui établissent des liens pour les personnes entre les soins de santé et des ressources non cliniques pour favoriser leur bien-être et satisfaire à leurs besoins psychosociaux et matériels qui sont ancrés dans les déterminants sociaux et structurels de la santé. C’est ce que nous appelons la « prescription sociale », et nous nous engageons à mettre de l’avant l’équité, le leadership communautaire et la collaboration pour faire progresser au Canada cette pratique holistique qui favorise l’autonomisation des personnes.

Restez à l’affût alors que nous vous proposerons prochainement des webinaires, des évènements d’échange de connaissances, et des façons par lesquelles vous pourrez vous impliquer. La prescription sociale est de plus en plus reconnue à l’échelle internationale comme étant une approche structurée pour l’établissement de meilleurs liens entre les soins cliniques (prescription) et les ressources de soutien non cliniques dans la collectivité (sociale), dans le but de faire la prestation de soins axés sur les personnes et de leur offrir la possibilité d’orienter leurs soins dans un cheminement encadré.

L’Institut canadien de prescription sociale (ICPS) est un nouveau pôle national administré par la Croix-Rouge canadienne qui vise à faire progresser la prescription sociale au Canada par l’échange et la promotion de pratiques de prescription sociale qui priorisent l’équité en santé, le leadership communautaire et la collaboration.

Joignez-vous à nous pour le lancement officiel de l’ICPS afin d’en apprendre davantage sur cette nouvelle initiative et de découvrir comment la prescription sociale peut changer des vies et venir en aide aux systèmes de santé qui peinent à offrir les soins et services requis.

Welcome to the first edition of the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing newsletter! I am so thankful to you, social prescribing champions, early adopters and those eager to learn more, for embarking on this new journey with us.

Anchored by the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing, or CISP, is a new national hub that aims to foster, share, and celebrate initiatives that connect people between health care and non-clinical supports for psychosocial, material and wellbeing needs rooted in the social and structural determinants of health. We call this “social prescribing”, and we are committed to foregrounding equity, community leadership and collaboration as we advance this empowering and holistic practice in Canada.

Stay tuned for upcoming webinars and knowledge sharing events and ways you can get involved. If you have any questions or would like to share about new social prescribing initiatives in your region, you can reach the CISP team at CISP@redcross.ca .

Social prescribing is gaining recognition internationally as a structured approach to better connect clinical care (“prescribing”) with non-clinical supports in the community (“social”), with an emphasis on delivering care that is person-centered, providing people with the power to direct their own care in a supported pathway.

The Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing (CISP) is a new national hub – anchored by the Canadian Red Cross – that aims to advance social prescribing in Canada by sharing, connecting, promoting, and celebrating social prescribing practices that prioritizes health equity, community leadership, and collaboration.
